KidLit Pizzazz Workshop
Sunday, November 6th (12:30pm-1:30pm)
Writing A Sense of Place with Author Lin Thompson
Suggested ages 8-12. Bring all five senses and join middle grade author Lin Thompson for an hour of learning how to write a sense of place! Lin will guide young writers through several exercises exploring how to bring a reader to a setting using only words. Writers will learn how readers all focus on different things with different lenses. It is going to be a jammed packed hour, so please arrive five minutes ahead of time!
Workshop Highlights:
Introduction and discussion about what is a setting and how to make a reader feel like they are in a real place.
We will review different books that use sensory details to ground us in a place.
Work together to create a list describing the space we’re in, encouraging kids to use different sensory details (and to branch out from just sight/hearing).
Writing activities and discussion involving a place your kids know well. They will learn how to create a mood or feeling and describe the place in different ways.
If there’s extra time, can have a few kids share what they’ve written.
Location/Check-in: Sidekick Coffee & Books, 1310 1/2 Melrose Ave., Iowa City
Registration will include a hardcover copy of The Best Liars in Riverview, choice of Decomposition Notebook, and hot cocoa!
Please note: Workshops are non-refundable
