Why Sidekick?
Sidekick Coffee & Books has been inspired by many people. Sidekicks are often my favorite characters in fictional stories. They are usually the character with the moral compass for the main character or play a vital role in teaching a lesson. Some of my favorite fictional sidekicks are Piglet from Winnie the Pooh, and Trixie’s Knuffle Bunny.
Our name comes from those closest to my heart—my children, who are my sidekicks whether they think so or not. Each one has brought a certain aspect to the shop.
With my background in elementary education, I know how important it is for kids to see that reading takes place in many different formats and so can learning. This is why storytime and other multi-sensory experiences are so important at Sidekick. People learn differently, and at Sidekick, we embrace it!

Katy loves a good story and has learned much along her journey through life as a teacher, mother, and avid reader. She has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and communications. She is certified in IMSE Orton-Gillingham and has worked as an ELL and first-grade teacher. She’s also been an event planner for the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and at the University of Iowa Center for Conferences.
