Explore Iowa City, UNESCO City of Literature

Children will explore our City of UNESCO Literature and discover their favorite spots, to read write, and create!  Each day will include a new adventure that begins at Sidekick Coffee & Books. 

Campers will be supervised by owner, Katy Herbold, former elementary school teacher, and two additional Sidekick Team members.

Day 1: Tie-dye camp t-shirt, personalize journal, hike & write through the Swisher Tract in University Heights (wear long socks and pants), begin creating a diorama using multiple mediums including the use a 3D printer, and enjoy a snack (snacks will vary each day but be provided by Sidekick) while listening to a story.

Day 2:  Wear your camp t-shirt for day 1 of exploring downtown Iowa City!  Campers will use the city bus to visit The University of Iowa Stanley Art Museum and The University of Iowa Natural History Museum.  We will pack our journals and snacks and break for frisbee, kites (weather permitting), reading, writing, and drawing at Hubbard Park.  Campers will return to Sidekick Coffee & Books by using the city bus by 4pm.

Day 3:  Surprise guest day!  Each week will offer a new surprise guest that has made a career out of working in literature. Maybe it is an illustrator, author, playwright, editor, or screenwriter?  The special guest will guide campers through a unique activity.  Campers will break for a game of kickball or reading and writing on the green space outside the Swisher Tract in University Heights and then return to Sidekick to continue to work on dioramas while having a snack and listening to a story. 

Day 4:  Bust out your tie-dye tee for another day of exploring Iowa City!  Today campers will visit the Iowa City Public Library and the office of Iowa City UNESCO City of Literature, Here we will learn what it means to be an UNESCO City of Literature and why it is so cool! Next, we will the walk to Pentacrest for a snack and read aloud. We will return to Sidekick Coffee & Books by 4pm.  Please wear comfortable walking shoes this day.

Day 5:  Campers will spend ½ of the afternoon completing dioramas. Next up, Tower Court Splash Pad.  Campers should pack swim wear that is also comfortable for walking.  We will enjoy an ice cream before leaving for the splash pad, reading, and writing time!  Campers will return to Sidekick Coffee & Books where their dioramas will be displayed for short art walk at 4pm pick-up.  Campers are welcome to arrive in swim wear or change in Sidekick’s single user bathrooms.  Towels will be provided. 

The daily schedule is subject to change.  We will let you know in as much advance as possible. 

Please apply sunscreen at home.  Sunscreen will be provided but will be reapplied by campers.  We cannot help with sunscreen application.  Please list all allergies, accommodations, and something your child loves to talk about in the comments. We strive to make this best camping experience possible!  Let us know any additional information about your child that will help us do so.

All camps are Monday-Friday from 1:00-4:00pm.

Camps are refundable up to a month prior to the camp, minus a $10 administrative fee.
